About Sahar

Sahar Dourgham is an Egyptian visual artist and Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Alexandria University. With an artistic career that began in 1992, she has become a prominent figure in the contemporary Egyptian art scene, known for her exhibitions, installations, video performances, and academic contributions in Egypt and abroad.

Her work explores themes of identity, urban spaces, storytelling, and experimental forms across painting, installation, printmaking, and performance art. She has participated in major national and international biennales, artistic residencies, and cultural collaborations, representing Egypt in leading exhibitions—including the 52nd Venice Biennale.

1992–2000

  • Entered the Egyptian art scene in 1992.

  • Participated in the Vanguards Exhibition (1992).

  • Won the Painting Prize in Egypt’s Visual Arts Competition (1992).

  • Participated in Port Said National Biennale (1996).

  • First solo exhibition at Al-Anfoushy Cultural Palace, Alexandria (1997).

  • Participated in Small Artworks Salon (1997).

  • Joined the Swedish Institute celebration of the European Year of Languages with an installation work (2001).

  • Received a scholarship at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm, with several exhibitions and workshops in Sweden (2001).

  • Exhibited in Sweden at MellanRummet Hall and in the Desert (Parts 1 & 2) exhibitions.

  • Collaborative performance Switching Languages presented in Sweden and later at the Goethe Institute in Alexandria (2003).

  • Participated in international workshops: Townhouse Gallery (Cairo), Urban Residency Program, and the 9th Wexford Artists Book Exhibition (Ireland).

  • Engaged in multiple printmaking and book-binding workshops with international artists (2002–2004).

  • Received the Culture Resource Award for Youth Art Projects (2005).

  • Solo exhibition New Paintings, Mashrabia Gallery (2005).

  • Installation exhibition Two Versions of Holes, Cairo & Alexandria Goethe Institutes (2006 & 2007).

  • Participated in Fayoum Winter Academy (2007).

  • Represented Egypt in the 52nd Venice International Biennale (2007).

  • Worked in film and video art as art director and assistant director (2008–2009).

  • Won 4th prize in scriptwriting at Zagora Film Festival, Morocco (2010).
